While you are vacationing in Hersonissos, we recommend dedicating a few days to visit the impressive sites in the area and the rest of the Heraklion Prefecture. Start your tour with a visit to the Minoan settlement and the Roman sites in Hersonissos, such as the ruins of a theater and houses, the fountain and the dock. It is also worth visiting the Paleo-Christian Basilica in the Kastri region and the splendid “Lychnostatis” Folklore Museum.
A must during your stay in Hersonissos is a visit to the magnificent Minoan Palaces of Knossos, Malia and Lyttos, which are located at close proximity of the settlement and can be easily reached by private car or bus.
We recommend spending a few days touring the rest of Prefecture of Heraklion to visit the impressive Minoan Cities of Phaistos, Amnissos, Gortyna, Tylissos and Levina, as well as the Minoan ruins in Archanes. Heraklion Town offers some excellent sightseeing, such as the Venetian Walls and Port, the Morozini Fountain and the wonderful Archaeological, Historical and Ecclesiastical Museums.
You can also take a tour of the picturesque villages, and splendid monasteries and churches in the Heraklion Prefecture to get acquainted with traditional Crete. The natural environment of Heraklion is superb and provides several very attractive areas for trekking and hiking, like Mt Youchtas and the Viannos-Amira Gorge.

In Hersonissos visitors are offered an abundance of breathtaking beaches. Apart from the long beach of Hersonissos, you can spend hours relaxing and swimming at the nearby beaches of Malia, Kato Gouves and Stalida.
You may also want to visit more distant Heraklion beaches. We suggest going to Ammoudara, Mononaftis, Agia Pelagia and Fodele on the northern coast of the Heraklion Prefecture, or Matala, Kalamaki, Agios Nikitas, Loutra, Katalyki and Lendas on the southern coast.
